An homage to Goldratt's - The Goal.  A story about the gap between the numbers and reality.  The other constraint.

Boone Packaging Team

Smiling elderly man with white hair.

Chuck

Martin

Chuck

The founder. Chuck built Boone Packaging over decades, and he's ready to hand it over — not because he's tired of the work, but because he's tired of telling his wife that next year will be the one that's different.

He's plainspoken, unhurried, and reads people better than he lets on. What he wants for the company is the same thing he wants for his marriage: to stop settling for good enough.

His decision about who should lead the business next is the one that sets everything in motion.

Smiling middle-aged man in a collared shirt portrait.

Roger

Martin

Chuck

The new president. Roger knows how to stabilize a plant, fix what's broken, and keep people moving in the same direction.

He's always been the steady hand, the one you call when things start to slide — but he's never been the one whose name sits at the top of the org chart, where every decision lands at his feet.

He leads by drawing people out and listening, an instinct that sets him apart from everyone who came before him. Whether that instinct is enough to move a company that's grown comfortable being merely fine is the question he has to answer.

Smiling elderly man with glasses and gray hair.

Martin

Martin

Martin

The CFO. Fifteen years in the building, and there's no one who knows the numbers better — where every dollar comes from, where it goes, where it's supposed to land.

Martin has been a major reason the company survived its hardest years, and he carries the weight of those years in a caution that never fully lifts.

When a new idea reaches the table, he doesn't argue; he offers to run the numbers, and the numbers have a way of saying no. He is the book's most formidable presence, and its most human.

Smiling woman with shoulder-length wavy hair.

Lynn

Lynn

Martin

The controller. Lynn sees the numbers differently than anyone around her, and she has for a long time — she just hasn't had anyone who wanted to look at them her way.

Quiet, sharp, and more capable than her title suggests, she has been waiting, mostly without knowing it, for someone to align with.

Given the chance, she can make the numbers tell a story the company has never heard.

Smiling woman with short blonde hair.

Mary

Lynn

Mary

Operations. Twenty-plus years on the floor, and Mary knows the machines and the people better than anyone in the building, down to who's carrying a fix in their head that no one ever thought to ask about.

She has never been invited into the room where the decisions get made. She has always been ready to be.  Her steady hand will become a key to better.

Al

Lynn

Mary

Engineering. Al runs a small, non-core corner of the business on almost nothing and makes it work.

He has real plans — he's drawn them up more than once — and filed them away every time, because experience taught him that things raised in this building tend to sit exactly where you set them down.

What he needs isn't a better idea. It's a reason to believe this time is different.
